In a world that is hugely invested in the rat race, it is difficult to find inspiration. But with people like the globally admired and loved music composer A.R Rahman around, one can never fall short of it. Such is his work and life!

We all know him as the creator of soulful music and the winner of a plethora of honours and awards, but the legend’s magnanimity continues to be worthy of exploration. As he turns 49 today, we wish his music continues to inspire us and soothe our souls. Here are a few things about A.R Rahman’s personal life and career that you possibly did not know.

1. A Born Hindu

A.R. Rahman as the world knows him today, was not always A.R.Rahman. He was born as R.S Dileep Kumar to the music composer father R.K Shekhar and mother Kasthuri (Kareema). It was when one of his sisters fell gravely ill, a Muslim friend of his asked him to pray at a particular mosque, which resulted in her speedy recovery. In the year 1989, at the age of 23 his entire family accepted Sufism and converted to Islam giving the world Allah Rakha Rahman (A R Rahman).

2. First Paycheck of Rs. 25000

Mani Ratnam discovered the talent in Rahman and it was for his Tamil film Roja that Rahman began film scoring with. He received a sum of 25000 rupees for the project, but the success of the film gained him not just popularity and admiration, but also National Film Award.

3. ‘SuperHeavy’ – International Music Group

A R Rahman along with Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart and Joss Stone deliver music of a completely different kind under the name SuperHeavy. Stewart calls SuperHeavy a mad alchlemist type experiment, which is a reason enough to look at their music as one that cannot be categorized.

4. Invitation from Obama

The music legend is known to have close relations with US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama and has even performed at the White House.

5. A Protective Father

Inspite of his busy schedules, Rahman makes sure that he spends enough time with his three children. He often watches 3D animation films with them. Rahman and his wife Saira are protective about his kids and believes that although he is a public figure, but his children are not a public property and should be allowed to grow up as any other children. His son Ammen was also born on the 6th January. Like father like son!

6. He is a firm believer

A.R. Rahman religiously prays five times a day. Fondly called the Mozart of Madras, he claims to derive inspiration for his work from God. He is one of the most grounded people and believes Namaz to be his daily oxygen.

7. Close Friends

Rahman has a huge fan base all over the world and his music has won hearts of millions. But the man worshipped as the God of South-Indian Cinema (Rajnikanth) and Master blaster (Sachin Tendulkar) are two such people Rahman is supposedly very close with. He once gifted Sachin a guitar after lovingly signing it.

8. K.M Music Conservatory – His Dream Music School

K.M. Music Conservatory, is the name of his academy for aspiring musicians. Rahman once said that music is all about transporting people; speaking a language that languages often fail to express. It is such thoughts that keep this maestro going.

9. Doordarshan Wonder Balloon
Young Rahman was seen in Doordarshan’s Wonder Balloon where he gained popularity as the kid who could play four keyboards at once.

10. Allah Rakha Rahman, Markham, Canada.

Yes! This music maestro has a street named after him in Canada (close to downtown Toronto). Canada presented him with the honour, celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema.

11. Oscar and Other Achievements

A.R Rahman is the first Asian to have won the prestigious Oscar award twice in the same year. In the year 2009, he was added to the list of World’s Most Influential People by the Times Magazine.
